The other reviewer did an excellent job of summing up the book, so I won't bother doing that. Instead, I'll point out reasons I enjoyed reading it.

First, it was a book I didn't skim. I tend to do that when the description or action gets too long. This is a personal preference. Some people enjoy lots of description and action, but I don't. I do enjoy a little bit of description to get me into the setting, but from there, my imagination takes over so I want the dialogue, internal thoughts, and action that adds to the plot rather than is randomly placed there or extended to the point where I lose interest. This was a book that read quick because it was to the point, and I liked that.

Second, it had horror elements. I found this to be a refreshing change from the lovelorn vampires currently popular on the market. Sorry but I'm not big into that kind of thing. Like the other person said, it probably can't be defined as horror, but there were parts where I cringed and said, "Ewe." One example is when Beka must either drink human blood or turn out like a ghoul who was a vampire who refused to drink human blood so he ended up feeding on corpses. It was so gross that it was awesome. Another example is when her head came off. So yeah, I'd say this is not for the faint of heart.

Third, I love that the main character, Beka, is not one of those gorgeous and slim women who have men falling all over themselves to meet. She's overweight and has real problems from her past to deal with. And as a bonus, Steopa, the vampire who attacked her and ended up making her a vampire, doesn't see her the way "humans" do. He kept saying, "Think like a vampire instead of a human" and it spoke of how he didn't notice all the things "wrong" with her that our society tends to view as wrong with women who are not perfect. I loved that! I also loved that they slowly established a bond. Nothing was forced or rushed. It progressed smoothly.

And last, but not least, it was not a cliffhanger. This book neatly ties itself up but also leaves you wondering what happens to the characters next. It's easier to wait for the next book when you feel the one you just read is complete. (Again, another personal preference.)

Fledgling Coiree Guardians Book One Mari Miniatt Matthew Jon Miniatt 9780982666005 Books Reviews

This was a great change from all the typical vampy stories where the heroine is perfect and the vampires are better humans than the humans. Beka is far from perfect and, for me, one of her best qualities, after her encounter with Steopa, is that the change that comes over her isn't just about being a fledgling; it's also about realizing that she hadn't been 'living' her life, she'd been hiding from it. It's awesome when a main character changes in a story.

Loved Steopa. Vincent is fun and funny and still manages to be threatening. Though of the two it's Steopa that I wouldn't want to tick off. There is snark - you gotta love it when vamps and humans get snarky with each other.

The story line in good and moved quickly enough to keep me still through a reading in one sitting. I wanted to find out what was going to happen next and that was refreshing too. It's been a while since I've read a vampire story that made me want to turn pages and keep reading and blow off cooking supper. There were also plenty of elements in the story that were mysterious and, probably will be covered in book 2. And bonus! It isn't a cliff hanger. Everything and everyone is pretty well tied up at the end, making the story satisfying and leaving room for me to be looking forward to reading the next book to find out what happens next.

Yes, there are some structural errors like typos, head hops, and odd action sequences but none of them bounced me completely out of the story. And honestly, I can't think of a single book - self pub or otherwise - that hasn't had errors of some kind.

Good characters, fast paced, no boring descriptions, and it was great to read a vampire story that included some of the lesser known legends/myths/folklore about the undead. I'd read it again.
I will be upfront and say that I had to subtract one star because there were some editing issues with this book Inconsistencies in the use of text type, a couple typos, and some choppy descriptions in some of the dicier action sequences. However, those things aside, this was still a highly readable book, and I enjoyed it greatly.

This book was like a delightful cross between the original Dracula (back when vampires were REALLY SCARY and not sparkley), and Indiana Jones. There was action! Suspense! And much to my relief, only very limited anxt. This isn't the vampire novel that comes free in the bottom of a Cracker-Jack box. This is the Real Deal. I really, really hope that Killer (The next book in the series.) will soon be available for .
