The writing quality is excellent, nuanced and interesting. The dialogue is fantastic, witty and sometimes profound. I'll definitely read more by this author.
With that being said, the heroine was a bit too woe-is-me for what her circumstances warranted, especially since there were other characters (including the hero) who had a much more difficult time than she did. Her motivation and reasoning, and the premise on which the actual plot is built, is a bit ridiculous, but for all that it was well written and interesting.
And Joss. Oh my goodness, I loved that man. I'm a sucker for beta heroes and he definitely is one, but he's so complex and wonderful. He's the reason I liked this book so much. He's hard working, honest, kind, loyal, respectful, willing to ask for help and be vulnerable, and the way he treats Augusta is just so beautiful. One of the things I loved the most is that he doesn't compliment Augusta on her appearance, although she's definitely pretty with a gorgeous body. Instead, he tells her she is worthy, and valuable, and that he loves the personality traits and quirks that make her HER.

There's a scene where Augusta wants to have sex with him. He gives her pleasure, but refuses to have sex with her because he loves her and if he sleeps with her, he wants it to be more than just a joining of bodies. He wants to truly MAKE LOVE with her, and if she doesn't love him, he can't do that. She tries to argue that it's her choice whether or not she needs love to have sex with him, and he responds that it's his choice, too. I thought that was beautiful. We talk about consent and not doing things the heroine doesn't want all the time, but the hero also matters and his body doesn't have to be at anyone's disposal if he does not choose that.
Joss wasn't perfect; he was a bit of a pushover with his cousin for much of the book, but he recognizes it and decides to change it, and he does it in a thoughtful, mature, responsible way.
I liked this book, but I loved Joss.

hmm, i thought it has potential.i like the storyline, but for me, the mood is just remained latent. no, "wow-ness", upheavals of feelings. quite forgettable, unfortunately.
The cover captured my attention immediately, and the story quickly captivated me. I don't like to reveal plot detail, as I myself hate to know too much in advance. You can check out other reviews if you like to know more about what will happen b between Augusta and Joss. What I want to emphasize is the quality of the writing. Teresa Romain is relatively new to me, and after reading this book I want to read everything she's written. She builds tension slowly and skillfully, like excellent literary foreplay! Both the heroine and hero have vulnerabilities to explore and overcome, and Romain honors this by taking time with them, in a provocative dance of revelation and understanding. Sometimes I race through a book, but I savored every paragraph, every sentence. This is one of the best of the genre that I've read in a while.
I really liked this book, which, like the rest of this trilogy, is a smidge less light-hearted than the Holiday Pleasures series. I also really appreciate the fact that both the hero and heroine are not exactly of the ton, even though they associate with it on a regular basis. (It was also nice to see Lady Tallant again.)

My one complaint is that, at least in the ebook, the text ended at ~82%, with the rest of the file being samples of other books. Although the ending worked out fine and didn't precisely feel rushed, I was at least half-expecting enough more story to get to the 90% mark.
The best book in the Matchmaker Trilogy! The heroine and hero are characters who have been introduced in the previous book. Augusta is an heiress struggling to find herself while Joss is an under-appreciated secretary trying to fulfill his dream. I loved the witty banter and growing attraction between them. It's a great read!
I enjoyed the first two of the Matchmaker Trilogy and was very excited to read this one. However, I have to say the overall story was much slower and just seemed to not get going as quickly as the first two. I enjoyed the characters very much and was happy with how the resolution eventually came to be. But overall, this one did not grab me as thoroughly as the others. I do recommend it for fans of Ms. Romain. For those who haven't read her yet, I suggest the others in the trilogy first.
Theresa Romain likes to invert romance tropes. We often encounter heroes who are emotionally unavailable and mistrustful of love and heroines who lack confidence in their own abilities and appeal. In this book, the heroine is seeking a casual affair to help her forget a past heartbreak, and the hero needs to learn that he deserves (and can have) a better life. There is witty banter and warm friendship between the principals and a satisfying resolution. I don't think the story really needed the character of the Marquess who sweeps in and sets things in motion; he seemed like more of a distraction than an integral part of the plot. I enjoyed this book.
I love Theresa Romain books. In this books she uses two tortured unhappy people, who as it turns out have much in common in spite of the huge difference in their financial situations. In spite of her wealth Augusta, had not only lost her beloved parents at the same time, the man she planned to marry, dropped her and married another. Not only had Augusta’s heart been broken but her trust in men was severely not good.
Joss had some different. After he turns down Augusta’s offer to become her lover - a man she could control and discard at will she was disappointed Joss refused. However, he did promise to keep her secrets and also agreed to help her find a more agreeable lover. Which we all image causes problems. I don't want to spoil anything else it is a really clean read and I enjoyed it. I can't wait for her next book.
